Coming Changes: How the Iowa Legislative Session Will Affect Drivers, Students, Businesses, and More

DES MOINES, Iowa — Drivers will soon be required to keep their phones aside. Additionally, children must ensure their gadgets are not in use when they’re supposed to be learning. Paraprofessionals might see an increase in pay as well. These alterations are coming about due to decisions made by Iowa legislators during the recent legislative session.

The majority of significant choices were orchestrated by Republicans, holding 34 out of 50 positions in the state senate and 67 out of 100 spots in the house.

Millions of dollars might finally be disbursed to aid those struggling with addiction. Transgender individuals in Iowa will lose extra safeguards under the Iowa Civil Rights Code. The state’s secretary of state has permission to collaborate with other organizations ensuring that only eligible U.S. citizens may cast their votes.

Companies will see over $1 billion in decreases for their contributions to the state’s unemployment account. Property owners won’t gain extra safeguards against a carbon capture pipeline initiative. Firefighting personnel will obtain expanded protection covering an increased range of cancers.

Medicaid coverage for gender-affirming surgeries and hormone treatments for transgender individuals in Iowa would cease. Starting now, an individual must be at least 18 years old to purchase a firearm.

In total, legislators plan to allocate approximately $900 million from the state’s savings to support a $9.4 billion budget for the upcoming fiscal year, which starts on July 1st.
