Canada Issues New Travel ‘Warning’ for U.S.

Recently, the U.S. revised its travel advice for Canada, and similarly, Canada has updated its guidance for the United States. The latest update from Canada includes a fresh caution recommending that visitors avoid protests in the United States.

Even though the travel advisory, last revised on June 11, advises individuals to exercise “normal security precautions” while visiting the U.S., it has been modified to include additional details about “safety and security—added information regarding protests in Los Angeles and several other large urban centers.”

the U.S. updated
its advisory for Canada with minor edits, suggesting that people use normal precautions when traveling there.

Canada’s advice for people traveling to the U.S. cautioned them to “avoid protests” and “comply with directives from local officials, such as nighttime restrictions.”

It includes this guidance: “Keep an eye on local news outlets for up-to-date details.”

“The protests in Los Angeles and other key cities,” the headline reads.

As of June 6, 2025, significant protests have been happening in Los Angeles. Similar events are being reported across various key urban areas. Extra law enforcement personnel have been dispatched, and a nighttime curfew has been established for much of downtown Los Angeles, running from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. Further curfews could potentially be announced with little warning.

Canada’s advisory also points out, “Incidents related to criminal activities from drug trafficking occur more often at the border with Mexico, particularly in these states:”

  • California
  • Arizona
  • New Mexico
  • Texas.”

When driving across the U.S.-Mexico border, the directive recommends that individuals “stay highly alert,” “use only authorized border checkpoints,” and “refrain from travel during nighttime hours.”

The advisory from Canada also cautions about crimes in the U.S., including minor as well as severe offenses.

It mentions that minor crimes like pickpocketing and bag-snatching happen frequently, especially in city centers and places popular with tourists.

The warning states that violent crimes seldom impact visitors. It further clarifies, “In major cities, such offenses typically happen in impoverished districts, especially after dark until morning. These incidents frequently involve alcohol consumption. Violent acts are usually committed by gangsters or participants in criminal organizations; however, they can occasionally be executed by solitary perpetrators.”

Additionally, there is guidance covering topics like terrorism, hiking, and air travel.
