Big Crowds Flock to 66th Annual Bavarian Festival in Frankenmuth: Music and Tradition Await!

FRANKENMUTH, Mich. (WNEM) – The aroma of bratwurst, the tunes of polka, and a zip line gliding over Main Street signify that the Bavarian Festival has returned to Frankenmuth.

This week marked the beginning of the 66th annual festival, combining traditional German culture with energetic amusement. It attracted visitors statewide to what is often referred to as Michigan’s “Little Bavaria.”

The street party on Friday night transformed Main Street into a festive venue, complete with food trucks, live music acts, games, and a zip line soaring above the downtown throng. Enthusiastic attendees filled both the primary tent where classic German polkas were performed, as well as the rock tent positioned behind Tiffany’s, which kept playing energetic tunes deep into the evening.

“This feels like Disney World 2.0; it’s truly a Bavarian fest,” stated attendee Collin Reinert, as he was immersed among his companions enjoying the festive ambiance.

To many, this isn’t merely a weekend ritual. For some, it’s an activity they’ve participated in since childhood, accumulating years upon years of recollections.

Sixty-six years back, when I was around 10 years old,” remembered Bill Zehnder, the Chairman of the Board at Bavarian Inn. “German bands were invited from Chicago, and naturally, we’ve always served excellent beer in Frankenmuth.

According to organizers, the festival generates over a million dollars for the local economy, attracting numerous visitors who populate hotels, restaurants, and stores throughout the city.

Frankenmuth, you all have been quite supportive,” stated Levan Svarc, who manages The Nut Chamber, one of numerous enterprises experiencing an uptick in sales over the weekend. “Without your patronage, we wouldn’t return.

Saturday’s schedule features family-friendly events including the Kindertag Parade and a cornhole tournament. On Sunday, the tents close to make way for the main event: the Bavarian Festival Parade, drawing large crowds along Main Street.

Whether you’re local or visiting, the festival highlights the appeal, traditions, and communal ethos of Frankenmuth. Entry costs only $10 per person. Children aged 12 and younger get in for free.

No matter if you’re here for the schnitzel, the steins, or the scenery, there’s still plenty of opportunity to lift your glass and exclaim “Prost!” right in the middle of Frankenmuth.
