The risks associated with carbon monoxide poisoning for tourists
on numerous occasions, most recently when reports emerged that a
A former New York Yankees player’s adolescent offspring passed away sadly during a family vacation in Costa Rica.
This is terrifying at best.

While organizing my family’s journey to Italy, the safety information included in our Airbnb booking mentioned: “The host has not declared the presence of a carbon monoxide alarm on the premises. It would be wise to bring a portable one during your visit.”

I promptly jumped into action to locate and pack our portable items.

It was slightly more than $20 and I’ve owned it for many years, though I don’t always take it along when traveling. Given that this was the first time we’d stayed at an Airbnb in quite some time—and they suggested bringing one—I decided not to take chances. Thus, I packed it in my carry-on several weeks before our departure.

A few days before we left home, I tested both the batteries that came with it and the device itself, then took the batteries out, put them in a plastic bag and put it all in our checked suitcase.

The next day before our departure, as my wife went through her checklist (recalling her meticulousness with the AirTags), she questioned me about whether I had one.

For the carbon monoxide detector, I exclaimed, “Good catch!” I headed downstairs to my travel accessories container and retrieved one.

FYI:

Natalie recently penned an article for Parents magazine discussing the use of carbon monoxide detectors when traveling.

We’re settled into our Airbnb, and I must say, I’ve been resting much more comfortably knowing my family is protected from carbon monoxide poisoning. This was particularly reassuring after coming across another news article today about an incident in Scotland.
A couple was discovered deceased inside their tent following what appears to be carbon monoxide poisoning.
Although instances remain infrequent overall, we’re encountering an increase in reported fatalities from carbon monoxide poisoning during travel. It’s wise to take precautions. The expense of a carbon monoxide detector can provide substantial reassurance.

To ensure I don’t overlook the device or the converter when we prepare to depart, I positioned our suitcase beside them as well.
