On Wednesday morning, Silver Airways issued an announcement on their website with a clear message to customers: “Do not proceed to the airport.” This sudden turn of events brings an abrupt close to the 14-year journey of this Florida-based carrier, headquartered in Fort Lauderdale. Industry insiders highlight multiple reasons behind Silver’s downfall. “Bankruptcies within the airline sector aren’t unheard of, yet airlines ceasing operations entirely is quite unusual,” notes Henry Harteveldt, an airline industry analyst from Atmosphere Research Group.

The airline functioned with razor-thin profit margins within an intensely competitive sector, making it highly susceptible to disruptions that could upend the whole operational strategy. According to Drew Dawson, a Professor of Bankruptcy Law at the University of Miami, Silver Airways has “frequently oscillated between declaring bankruptcy” over time. He also pointed out that their aircraft count steadily diminished as they progressed through each bankruptcy proceeding.
The sudden closure has resulted in travelers being stuck without options and desperately seeking alternative ways to get to where they were headed. Silver Airways operated flights to various holiday locations throughout Florida, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean such as Nassau, Bimini, Saint Kitts, and Saint Martin. The airline informed customers who had future bookings that “any charges made via credit cards ought to be eligible for refunds either from your credit provider or your travel agent.”
