This weekend, two major global soccer tournaments begin in Southern California, sparking enthusiasm alongside apprehension. Fans and immigration supporters are expressing worries about heightened federal presence and enhanced stadium security measures.
More than 50,000 spectators are anticipated at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood this Saturday for the opening game of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, featuring a clash between Mexico and the Dominican Republic. This event takes place as immigration raids continue throughout Los Angeles, which has led to security worries prompting the Mexican national team to move from their initial chosen accommodation.
Just one day later, the FIFA Club World Cup begins at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, with European giants Paris Saint-Germain and Atlético de Madrid squaring off in the first of six scheduled matches at the venue this month.
However, despite growing enthusiasm, a now-removed social media post by U.S. Customs and Border Protection has caused concern. “CBP will be geared up and prepared to offer security,” the agency stated, referring to the Club World Cup games. The comment was taken down afterward but had already fueled worries amongst supporters.
Both FIFA and Gold Cup organizers have mentioned they’re collaborating with local and federal law enforcement agencies; however, Immigration and Customs Enforcement isn’t officially included as one of the stadium’s partners. Despite this, the deployment of National Guard units across the area along with the implementation of a fresh federal travel restriction seems to have altered the ambiance significantly for numerous dedicated football fans who frequent these events.
Human rights organizations caution that the present atmosphere might dampen turnout, particularly within Latino and immigrant populations which have traditionally been key supporters of American soccer. For instance, a game recently held between Mexico and Switzerland in North Carolina saw merely 25,000 attendees at what can hold up to 55,000 people—significantly lower than anticipated figures.
Both SoFi Stadium and the Rose Bowl have announced their intention to adhere to standard safety measures. However, as the 2026 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to host several games across Southern California, both spectators and authorities will keenly observe how events unfold over this upcoming weekend.
