Bastrop Pioneers On-Demand Transportation, Enhancing Travel Accessibility

Bastrop has extended its on-demand transportation service as part of CARTS to encompass the entire urban area, thereby enhancing mobility options for all citizens.

Authorities stated that the aim is to assist more residents in accessing vital locations, such as job sites, healthcare facilities, and supermarkets.

Launched in 2021, CARTS has maintained an average of 2,800 monthly rides since its inception. According to Assistant City Manager Vivianna Andres, the extension was initiated following the identification of a requirement for improved transit alternatives in parts of Bastrop that lacked comprehensive service coverage.

“We recognized that our service area was quite restricted when it came to offering alternative transportation for individuals without vehicles,” explained Andres. “This included regions like the State Park area, the Piney Ridge area, as well as parts of the Industrial Park area which were not adequately covered. Consequently, many residents living in these zones found themselves unable to utilize the on-demand services.”

Currently, CARTS functions within the city boundaries from Monday to Friday, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Individuals can schedule rides using the CARTS application or by dialing 512-505-5666. The service continues to be available, with ticket prices established at $2 for a single ride, $3 for a round trip, and $6 for an entire day’s access.

“There are many residents in the Bastrop region who cannot afford a car and struggle to reach the city for essential services such as medical consultations or medication,” noted Bastrop local Anna Burns. “It’s only when you witness situations like these that you understand how crucial accessibility is for everybody.”

In the future, local officials in Bastrop are investigating extra mobility options, such as possibly adding electric bicycles, with the aim of improving transportation choices for the town’s inhabitants.
