TSA Greenlights Real ID Alternative for iPhone Users—Limited to Select Travel Types

Your passport is getting a digital upgrade — but hold onto your physical one for now.

Apple has recently introduced an exciting new capability that will enable iPhone users to store their passports in the Apple Wallet starting this fall. This update transforms your device into a comprehensive tool for traveling, though initially only within the confines of the U.S.

The updated digital passport will be approved at TSA checkpoints, which could make those airport security queues a bit more bearable.

“Although it doesn’t replace your actual passport, you can use the digital ID for traveling within the country and at checkpoints where the TSA supports it,” stated an Apple representative during the company’s recent extravagant event.

The introduction coincides with the implementation of REAL ID requirements starting in May, causing travelers to rush to determine if their driver’s licenses were up to standard. If not, they needed to consider using a passport for flights between LAX and LaGuardia instead.

Now, Apple aims to simplify travel with their “just tap and go” feature.
