Students Mix Up Creative Mocktails at UNLV Hospitality Camp

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – In terms of hospitality, nowhere compares to Las Vegas.

A batch of aspiring industry experts received a glimpse into what it takes to flourish in the city that consistently keeps going.

UNLV’s Hospitality Camp is mixing things up. The program goes beyond textbooks, allowing students to combine flavors, creativity, and career opportunities through practical insights into the hospitality industry.

We often mention that we’re operating in the world’s premier laboratory,” stated Missy Arendash, director of the William F. Harrah College of Hospitality at UNLV. “The essence of hospitality permeates all our activities in Las Vegas.

On Wednesday, students honed their abilities in crafting mocktails with guidance from thebartending company Sips in the Desert.

Starting from technique all the way through to taste and presentation, they discovered the elements involved in making a handcrafted, non-alcoholic beverage that retains both flavor and flair. Following this, they developed their own special drinks, each one drawing inspiration from iconic landmarks of Las Vegas.

I absolutely enjoy preparing these mocktails,” remarked Cash Dennis, an UNLV camper. “They’re immensely entertaining. We created this fantastic, outstanding drink. It has a Sprite base mixed with cranberry and a touch of lime juice, providing a refreshing zing and adding excellent taste.

Dennis, who has just graduated from high school, is looking toward the future. This fall, he will be attending UNLV where he intends to pursue a major in hospitality, specifically concentrating on PGA Golf Management.

Although mixology might be the most vibrant aspect of camp, the program delves deeply into every facet of the hospitality sector.

“We’re discussing sports management, food and beverages, as well as events. We’ve also ventured into private clubs, travel and tourism, and even luxury healthcare,” stated Arendash.

Students also master the craft of crafting exceptional guest experiences and gain VIP entry into the behind-the-scenes operations of several prominent Las Vegas hotels such as Caesars Palace and the South Point Hotel and Casino.

“We are fully engaging these campers with the hospitality environment that Las Vegas is famous for,” Arendash stated. “This place genuinely serves as an attraction, and since we’re the top-rated program nationally, we’re delighted to host this camp.”

The William F. Harrah College of Hospitality at UNLV has been named the leading national institute for hospitality and leisure management. It is now entering its second consecutive year organizing the hospitality camp.
