Local leaders convened at Fort Ticonderoga on Thursday to reveal a new heritage tourism trail that stretches through Vermont, New York, and Canada.
The trail includes 18 historical sites that highlight the importance of the Hudson-Champlain Corridor in the struggle for liberty. This initiative coincides with America’s upcoming 250th anniversary.

Beth Hill, CEO of Fort Ticonderoga, stated, “This provides an opportunity for travelers both close by and afar to discover the whole area along with the narrative it encompasses.” She further explained, “While it’s about gazing into the past and acquiring historical knowledge—which is certainly what we focus on at places such as Fort Ticonderoga—we also encourage individuals to engage directly with these experiences in their present-day visit.”
The trail has been named “The Northern Department,” a military department set up by the Continental Congress in 1775.
Although Fort Ticonderoga initiates the trail, the main objective is to promote tourism to the various other historical locations.
Laura Trieschmann, the Vermont State Historic Preservation Officer, stated that although the territory now known as Vermont was referred to as the New Hampshire Grants during the Revolutionary period, this fact does not diminish its historical significance as a state.
She stated that this era brought Chimney Point, Mount Independence, Bennington, and Hubberton into prominence, propelling them permanently into the annals of our history.
The program becomes feasible due to the support from donations.
