7 Must-Visit Mountain Towns in the U.S. This Summer

I can never grow weary of the blend where wooded paths meet majestic mountain vistas.

Mountain towns have always had a special spot in my heart—not because of skiing or snowboarding (those I can do without during the wintertime), but because of what occurs there.
after
When the snow disappears, and once the paths clear up as the wildflowers begin to emerge, these villages transform into ideal spots for relaxation, discovery, and inhaling that fresh mountain air.

And indeed, the U.S. has
plenty
Of mountain getaways—but these stand out from the rest. Some act as entry points to magnificent national parks, while others boast unique themes and surprising allure (imagine art colonies, thermal pools, or perhaps even ghostly lodgings)!

A majority of these mountain towns can be easily accessed with just a brief ride from significant international airports. As for those that require additional travel efforts? They certainly justify each mile covered to arrive at their locations.

The Hyatt Vacation Club at The Ranahanai

Mammoth Lakes, California

I initially came across Mammoth Lakes during a road trip for hiking purposes.

Big Pine Lakes

—One of my absolute favorite hikes in California (really, it feels like we have Banff right here with us).

We had planned to start the trek early, so we opted to stay for one or two days in Mammoth Lakes ahead of time. To my surprise— I became equally enamored with the town as I was with the hiking itself!

Mammoth Lakes serves as a year-round adventure hub. From ascending via the gondola to reach breathtaking mountaintops, to trekking to cascading waterfalls, discovering attractions such as Devil’s Postpile and Rainbow Falls, or hitting the slopes at Mammoth Mountain, this town caters wonderfully to those who love outdoor activities. If your idea of enjoying nature involves relaxing in a natural hot spring with a local brew, Mammoth also provides that experience perfectly.

If you’re considering a visit

Yosemite National Park

Here’s a suggestion: Mammoth Lakes lies just beyond the Sierra through Tioga Pass. If you’re up for an extended road trip and wish to prolong your adventure, these destinations pair wonderfully together.

If you’re planning a

journey to the Eastern Sierra Mountains

Don’t simply rush through Mammoth; take your time. There’s lots to enjoy and experience here, both activities and cuisine. It likely won’t be long before you’re as captivated by this place as I was.

The Westin Monache Resort in Mammoth

    or

    The Village Lodge

Taos, New Mexico

When imagining mountain towns, you likely envision somewhere tucked away.
in
The mountains cradle the area from above, blanketed with pines. However, Taos stands apart. Nestled at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, it unfolds beneath the vast skies of New Mexico.

Many generations of artists have been attracted to this location, depicting it through their paintings and sculptures. As you explore the area, make sure to visit some of the over 70 galleries scattered throughout the town and admire the artistic talent showcased here.

Apart from the artwork, there lies significant history—history that is real, dynamic, and thriving! In the 1700s, Taos initially served as a fortified trading hub where Hispano settlers interacted with their neighbors.

Taos Pueblo

, merely three miles away from downtown.

This village has seen continuous habitation for more than a millennium, and strolling through its earthen structures makes history come alive within you. It stands uniquely as the sole Indigenous American settlement acknowledged as both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a National Historic Landmark.

Returning to town feels relaxed yet endlessly entertaining. You might stumble upon live music performances here.

Taos Plaza

Stop by a small bookshop where a cat is napping in the display window, sip some lavender lemonade, and listen as locals discuss snowpack measurements and upcoming poetry events.

If you’re embarking on a road trip through New Mexico, the

High Road to Taos

It is definitely worthwhile. Envision vast desert landscapes, tranquil mountain hamlets steeped in Spanish heritage, and artisans peddling their creations from clay houses.

From there, you can delve into exploring it.

Rio Grande Gorge

(walking across the bridge is an exhilarating experience on its own), take a ride in a hot air balloon, or simply relax and watch the crowd with a green chile burrito in your hand.
