Sam Gardiner, a participant in Race Across The World, passed away due to injuries sustained in a car accident, as confirmed by his family.
The 24-year-old, who participated with his mother, Jo, in the second season of the worldwide travel challenge, died on Thursday due to injuries he received in a collision earlier that week.
Gardiner was at the wheel of a white Volkswagen Golf R station wagon when the car drifted off the roadway, flipped over, and came to rest on its side.

In 2020, Sam and his mother Jo participated jointly in the Race Across The World, undertaking an exciting journey through Mexico and Argentina.
His mother, Jo, shared her devastation following the loss of her child.
In a statement, his parents Andrew said: “We are heartbroken over the loss of our dear son Sam in a tragic accident.”
Sam departed from us much earlier than anyone wished, and even though no words can truly encapsulate the brightness, happiness, and vitality he injected into our existence, we cling to the recollections that rendered him so extraordinary.
Sam was cherished by his family. Whether as a son, brother, or nephew, he was known for being devoted, humorous, and strongly protective.
He participated in Race Across The World in 2019, an experience that broadened his horizons and ignited his passion for adventure and exploration.
He was ready to follow whatever path lay ahead and made an impact on every person he encountered along his journey. His greatest joy came from working as a landscape gardener on the West Coast.

A representative from the police stated: “Regrettably, we have to confirm that the driver of a white Volkswagen Golf R station wagon, who was involved in a solo crash on Monday, May 26th, has unfortunately passed away.”

The driver, identified as a 24-year-old male, has been recognized as Sam Gardiner.
His relatives have been notified and are receiving support from officers who have received special training.
