Whenever possible though, avoid using tents; opt instead for sleeping beneath a vast expanse of starlit sky.

The city is merely a quick trip away. As Desolation Canyon is managed by the Bureau of Land Management, make certain you have all necessary permits organized prior to your visit. Although you can obtain a permit for “Deso” throughout the entire year, it’s best to schedule your trip during spring through late fall when both temperature conditions and water levels are more favorable.
Your lodging during the trip will consist of the tents and sleeping bags you provide. Prepare for insects and high temperatures by bringing ample insect repellent, sunscreen, and clothing like sun shirts and wide-brimmed hats. Keep in mind that the climate within the canyon can change rapidly—from calm periods to sudden storms—so be prepared to frequently alter your attire as needed.
