RKC Third Coast Scraps Sioux Falls Home Opener Over Air Quality Concerns

SIoux FALLs, s.d. (DAKOTA NEWS NOW) — Following their initial trio of away games in the usl w-league’s inaugural season, sioux falls city football club will have to postpone their much-anticipated home debut.

The inaugural home game for the team at Bob Young Field on Sunday evening had to be canceled as the visiting club, RKC Third Coast from Racine, Wisconsin, decided to forfeit because of subpar air quality resulting from Canadian wildfires smothering the area.

Sioux Falls City FC is awarded a 3-0 win and gains three points in the USL W-League standings. This brings their record up to 3-1 overall with nine points, whereas RKC drops to 0-4.

After RKC decided to forfeit, Sioux Falls City chose to go ahead with an intrasquad scrimmage instead. According to Dakota News Now Sports, Head Coach Joe DeMay and the team discussed this unusual circumstance, making it evident that they were keen on playing the game.

We received communication from the club indicating potential difficulties in fielding enough players,” explains DeMay. “The league also stated that we needed to fulfill our fixtures. Additionally, the air quality forecast took an unexpected turn; it was expected to be quite favorable today but gradually worsened as wind patterns altered. Throughout the day, we kept monitoring this situation and devised a strategy alongside the league. We all reached consensus on this approach, yet somehow they decided against following through despite our collective agreement.

“To witness children and the younger generation looking up to us and attending our games is incredibly enjoyable. Their smiles motivate us, even though we might not have played in the game ourselves, they inspire us to play for them and with purpose,” explains Sioux Falls City Defender Tyreese Zacher.

The upcoming game for Sioux Falls will be held on Friday evening when they face off against Minnesota Aurora FC at TCO Stadium located in Eagan, MN. The team’s subsequent home match is set for Wednesday, June 11th, where they will play host to Rochester FC starting at 7:00 PM sharp at Bob Young Field.
