BOSTON (SHNS) – With the exception of just one game, all Massachusetts Lottery offerings experienced a decline in sales during April. However, regulators approved modifications to that single game on Tuesday, which the Lottery anticipates will boost both sales and earnings.
Last month, The Lottery saw sales of $454 million, which was down by $29.3 million or 6.1% compared to April 2024, as reported by Executive Director Mark William Bracken.

On Tuesday, it was reported as the fourth successive month showing a decline in year-over-year sales. The sole product to experience growth in April was Keno, with sales rising by $5.9 million or 5.9%, totaling $105.7 million for the period.
Despite the ongoing sales decline, the Lottery experienced an impact on its monthly profits due to a higher prize payout ratio compared to last April. According to estimates, the Lottery distributed approximately 76.2% of April’s revenue as prizes this past month, up from 74.64% during the same period last year. As per Bracken’s report, the projected profit for April stood at around $74.1 million, down from $82.6 million recorded in April 2024.
Over the first ten months of fiscal year 2025, the Lottery has generated sales exceeding $4.89 billion for its scratch tickets, draw games, and various offerings. This figure is down by $178.9 million or 3.5%, compared to the corresponding timeframe in fiscal 2024. Among all Massachusetts Lottery games, only Keno and Lucky For Life have seen higher revenues in fiscal 2025 relative to the same period in fiscal 2024.
The Lottery announced on Tuesday that it is projecting a net profit of approximately $876.5 million up until now in the fiscal year 2025. When accounting for variations in the calendar, this figure indicates a decrease of around $88.3 million from what was recorded at the equivalent point last year.

She anticipates that the Lottery will yield $1.05 billion in profits for the fiscal year 2025. Additionally, she projects “steady” retail sales and profitability to remain unchanged for the fiscal year 2026.
On Tuesday, the Lottery Commission granted Bracken permission to modify the Lottery’s rules in order to adjust the draw schedule for Mass Cash, a game introduced initially.
introduced in 1991
Essentially doubling its size, this game has drawings every day at 9 p.m. However, the Lottery plans to introduce two Mass Cash draws per day beginning July 20—one at noon and another in the evening.
“The Lottery expects this modification will be well-received by our players and will result in higher sales and profits,” General Counsel Gregory Polin stated in a memorandum regarding the alteration.
