American Red Cross Opens Shelter for Tornado Survivors

SIKESTON, Mo. (KFVS) – “It feels as though they’re hesitant to lose their dignity by seeking refuge at a shelter,” explained Tonya Woodard, who manages the shelter.

The group is using the Sikeston YMCA to offer a facility where tornado survivors can shower, sleep, and access additional services. According to Woodard, only 10 individuals have signed up in the past day.

“They wish to return to their homes. Their intention is to remain there as long as possible. This morning, we had a lady walk in who only needed information about available resources. After she ate breakfast with us, she mentioned that part of her roof had caved in at home. She expressed concern over the stability of the remaining portion of her house and fervently prayed that the rest wouldn’t collapse,” explained Woodard.

The Red Cross additionally offers meals for those in need, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

David Moyers from Sikeston assists in preparing over three dozen lunchboxes.

“When the chance arose for me to come down and volunteer, I took it,” he stated.

Moyers mentioned that he has served as a Red Cross volunteer during natural calamities over the past decade.

“I’ve addressed the impacts of hurricanes. I’ve helped out as far as Maui, dealt with tornadoes locally, and after receiving blessings over the years, this is my way of giving back,” Moyers stated.

He informed Heartland News that everybody has expressed gratitude for their efforts.

“He mentioned that with providing food and shelter, it has been well-received.”

Woodard wanted you to remember the victims throughout their lengthy journey towards recovery.

“Just offer up a prayer for them since they’re experiencing so much difficulty at present,” she stated.

Woodard informed us that the shelter will remain operational for as long as the community has ongoing needs.
