Visitors exploring a beachside area on Edisto Island stumbled upon human remains, as reported by the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office.
On May 23, a party exploring the Jeremy Cay area close to Legare Road on Edisto Island unexpectedly came upon what they initially believed to be fossils. However, after closer examination, the team identified them as human remains and alerted the Colleton County Sheriff’s Department, as stated in an official statement.
The deputies alongside the Edisto Police Department cordoned off the area and initiated an initial inquiry, according to the statement.
The remains were discovered at what authorities think was an “overlooked gravesite” linked to a 19th-century settlement called Edingsville Beach, as stated in the announcement.
Edingsville Beach, founded circa 1825, sat several miles northeast of the area, situated between Jeremy Inlet and Botany Bay. It served as a favored retreat for affluent travelers during the 1800s, as mentioned.

Due to erosion caused by the Atlantic Ocean and the effects of the Civil War, the settlement—which included around 60 brick homes—was largely deserted following the conclusion of the conflict in 1865. The town ultimately turned into an empty ghost town in 1893 when a powerful hurricane struck the region, according to the report.
The finding of human remains on Friday was not the initial one from the settlement.
“In 2015, a visitor from Pennsylvania exploring the northern part of Edisto Island noticed some bones protruding from the mud as the tide was rising. Before these could be swept away into the sea, he managed to extract several of them,” the report stated.
Subsequently, a previous ranger from the Edisto Beach State Park, during his time off, discovered a skull with attached teeth that were traced back to the period between 1865 and 1870, as mentioned in the article.
The remains discovered on Friday have been moved to the Medical University of South Carolina for forensic examination and identification, as stated in a press statement.
