AAA Forecasts 1.7 Million Ohio Travelers for Memorable Memorial Day Weekend

COLUMBUS, Ohio (
WCMH
— The Memorial Day Weekend is among the most hectic periods for travel, with millions of individuals hitting the highways and taking to the skies during this holiday.

AAA forecasts that over 45 million individuals will embark on travels, marking an increase of approximately 1.4 million from last year. However, could the weather conditions or financial atmosphere influence this trend at all?

The Memorial Day Weekend is traditionally seen as the kickoff of summer. Nevertheless, for us in Ohio, it hasn’t quite felt like that so far. Despite this, an estimated 1.7 million people in Ohio plan to travel over the holiday, with around 1.5 million opting to reach their destinations by car.

“We’ve discovered that individuals prefer driving to their vacation spots rather than flying. There are several factors contributing to this,” stated Kara Hitchens.

The first reason: Taking the wheel usually offers more convenience compared to taking to the skies.

“You have the ability to create your own schedule. However, when you’re traveling by air, you naturally become subject to the airline’s timetable,” stated Hitchens.

Five seniors from Logan County have been awarded $1,000 grants.

The second reason,
gas prices
As stated by AAA, the present nationwide average for gasoline stands at approximately $3.16. This time last year, however, the prices were significantly higher, nearing $3.61.

“The usual seasonal increase in gas prices that we typically observe at this time of year hasn’t arrived just yet. This upsurge might happen later in the summer, but for now, fuel costs seem quite reasonable, providing a benefit to individuals planning to travel by car,” she explained.

The Memorial Day Weekend typically marks the opening of public pools. Yet, in Ohio, swimming season hasn’t started quite yet. Nevertheless, individuals who have arranged activities for this holiday likely planned ahead several months ago. Therefore, despite the weather playing no role in determining how folks will enjoy their weekend, analysts from AAA suggest that economic uncertainties could influence peoples’ decisions instead.

It will be intriguing to observe how things develop for the remainder of the summer since the economy remains highly uncertain,” stated Hitchens. “Prices are still elevated; grocery costs remain high. Even airline fares are being scrutinized, showing an increase from last year. Therefore, these price factors significantly influence the situation.

If you’re stepping out this weekend, Hitchens advises planning ahead.

“You should ensure you’re aware of where construction sites are located, along with any other potential obstacles. It’s also important to carry an emergency roadside kit containing essential items like water and snacks just in case you find yourself stranded beside the road,” she explained.

NBC4 also queried about the top travel spots for Ohio residents this weekend, with Hitchens stating that the majority prefer heading south.
