State driver’s licensing agencies have also encouraged applicants to ask themselves whether they need a REAL ID right away or whether they can hold off until the surge passes.
Some have taken to

to gripe about the lack of appointments or about the lines at the DMV, with some saying they still had to experience long wait times even if they planned ahead. One woman even brought a chair so she could sit comfortably until her number was called.

wrote on X
: “The Real ID line wraps around the block twice… Easily the longest line I’ve ever seen. Maybe (just maybe) this could’ve been communicated a little better.”
Others are just frustrated with the process in general, citing difficulties they encountered and for some,
privacy issues

“I was going to use my passport as Real ID but then I remembered that you have to surrender it for weeks (or months!) when it is renewed,”
An X user posted on April 25.
People without a state-issued Real ID will not be allowed to fly within the U.S. during the extended passport renewal period. This system is quite inconvenient.
How to Obtain a Genuine REAL ID
Only state-run motor vehicle departments such as the DMV, or MDV provide REAL IDs. (The distinction between your current state-issued driver’s license or non-driver ID is marked by a specific emblem located at the upper-right corner.)
To determine exactly what—or which—documents you’ll need for obtaining a license, it’s advisable to reach out directly to your state’s motor vehicle department because these prerequisites can differ across states. However, generally speaking, you must furnish paperwork showing your complete legal name, birthdate, Social Security number, evidence of your primary home’s address, as well as confirmation of your lawful standing within the country.
