TSA Urges Travelers: Don’t Miss the REAL ID Deadline!

Following numerous postponements, the REAL ID deadline has finally arrived. Individuals across the nation who wish to board flights must now show IDs that comply with REAL ID standards.

Starting Wednesday, Massachusetts and Rhode Island driver’s licenses lacking a distinct yellow star in the upper-right corner will fail to comply with federal requirements for boarding domestic flights.

People looking to fly can upgrade their ID’s at the DMV or RMV in their area.

Residents can also travel with a passport, a passport card, and other federally recognized ID’s will be accepted, TSA said.

However, if you don’t have a REAL ID you may be moved to another line, which could include extra steps and longer wait times.

We will be processing you,” stated Steve Lorincz, the acting Executive Assistant Administrator for Security Operations at TSA. “This may require extra time, but we’ll accomplish it efficiently.

This requirement originates from the events of September 11, 2001, and is intended to enhance flight safety by confirming your identification.

Several travelers that NBC 10 contacted on Tuesday were thoroughly ready before the deadline arrived.

For my part, I initiated this before the pandemic started, expecting that it would happen,” stated Ed Martins from Connecticut. “To be honest, I’m eager for it because it simply adds an extra layer of transparency and safety to everything.

The TSA advises all passengers to allocate additional time for security checks, regardless of whether they possess a REAL ID.
