An 18-year-old who was fatally shot by a Cincinnati police officer
on Thursday, May 1.
On the next day, according to statements from both prosecutors and law enforcement officials, he deliberately struck Deputy Larry Henderson with a vehicle, resulting in his demise, as an act of vengeance for the death of his son.
The testimony provided by Cincinnati Police Homicide Detective Carl Beebe during Tuesday’s proceedings unveiled fresh information regarding the day when Deputy Henderson passed away.
Hinton met with Chief Teresa Theetge at the Criminal Investigations Section (CIS) of the police department on Linn Street sometime after 9:30 a.m. on Friday.
That’s where he viewed the police body camera footage of his son, Ryan Hinton, who had a firearm, getting shot and killed by an officer.
According to the police chief, the officer informed investigators that the individual suspected of stealing the vehicle aimed a gun at him.
Hinton departed from CIS approximately at 10:30 a.m.
His relatives removed him from the meeting because of his “distress” following the viewing of the video, according to testimony from Detective Beebe.
Hinton came back to CIS approximately two hours after he initially left, arriving at 12:40 p.m., to retrieve his vehicle, which was a black Ford Focus.
He departed initially but came back to the structure at 12:49 pm before departing once more, as per the detective’s account.
That was when Hinton headed towards the University of Cincinnati.
Detective Beebe stated that according to the evidence and video recordings, Hinton traveled along Clifton Avenue before heading towards Martin Luther King Drive, where he noticed Deputy Henderson managing a traffic signal for UC’s commencement ceremony.
The deputy wore a sheriff’s uniform with a fluorescent vest, Detective Beebee said.
The prosecutors requested him to explain the suspect’s movements on the road at the time the deputy was struck.
According to eyewitness accounts,” the detective stated, “the suspect moved into the central lane—the one that serves as both a median and a turn lane—pulled over into this spot and halted. At that moment, there weren’t any vehicles ahead of him, nor were there any barriers.
The prosecutors requested Detective Beebe to inform the courtroom about the events that transpired following the suspect halting the vehicle.
He said under oath:
“Based on both eyewitness accounts and the footage, the car rapidly sped up, moved eastward, and then crossed over into the opposing lane of traffic once there were no vehicles blocking his path. The car continued past these barriers in the center of the road, drove right through the intersection where Deputy Henderson was positioned, hit Deputy Henderson, and also collided with a metal utility pole.”
The detective stated that there was no sign the suspect attempted to halt or evade striking the victim.
Following the accident, several police officers promptly arrived at the location to provide emergency medical assistance to Deputy Henderson.
He was transported via ambulance to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he passed away from his injuries several hours afterward.
“We think, according to our inquiry and the statements from the witnesses we have interviewed so far, that Hinton exited our office, went on a trip, encountered Deputy Henderson, and deliberately chose to accelerate towards Deputy Henderson with the intent to hit and ultimately kill him,” Detective Beebe stated during testimony.
The Cincinnati police arrested and charged Hinton with aggravated murder.

‘A significant unresolved mental health issue’
Following the questioning by the prosecutors, defense lawyer Clyde Bennett IIII conducted a cross-examination, asserting that his client was undoubtedly not thinking clearly and struggles with mental health problems.
Bennett contended that the investigators were unaware of Hinton’s mental state at the times he viewed the bodycam footage of his son’s fatal shooting, when he went back to CIS to retrieve his vehicle, or when he supposedly assaulted Deputy Henderson.
Beebe replied that they knew Hinton had been ” emotionally disturbed” following conversations with relatives and eyewitnesses.
In their case for bail during the hearing, the prosecution asserted that they possess multiple items of proof indicating Hinton ought to stay incarcerated without being granted bail.
“Because of the extremely random nature of this attack, it renders an unpredictability that the defendant cannot be accounted for with a bond when he is released…” prosecutors said. “The defendant in his current state is a giant mental health question mark and is a clear and present danger and poses a substantial risk [to] law enforcement officers and to the public…”
Bennett agreed with prosecutors that mental health is a concern, which is even more reason his client needs treatment while in jail. He said he wants to make sure Hinton is treated as a mentally ill person and not a “cop killer.”
“He’s receiving no treatment at Clermont County,” he said.
Following statements from both parties, the judge ruled to detain Hinton in custody with no bail set and mandated unspecified mental health services for him.
Hinton’s upcoming court appearance is set for May 12.
