Kiawah Island Beach ordinance changes to protect wildlife, environment

KIawah Island, S.C. (WCSC) – Officials on Kiawah Island are undertaking a year-long effort to revise part of an ordinance with the aim of more clearly establishing protections for the main dune system.

The Kiawah Island Town Council reviewed the suggested amendment on Tuesday, aiming to revise Section 16 of its Beach Management Ordinance.

Jim Jordan, Kiawah Island’s Environmental and Wildlife Director, mentioned that the previous ordinance included clauses that excluded specific sections of the dune from being regulated by the town. They aimed to ensure comprehensive protection for the entire area without exceptions.

Additionally, there are fresh rules concerning pets. Jordan mentioned that animals must remain leashed during the early spring season to prevent interference with migratory red knots and safeguard these birds from disruptions.

There are numerous additional modifications, but Jordan states that they all contribute to a single primary objective.

“To safeguard Kiawah’s shores and ensure everyone can appreciate these beaches, while also having proper regulations in place to preserve them,” Jordan stated.

He mentioned that the community usually shows strong support for their initiatives aimed at safeguarding and conserving the environment and wildlife on Kiawah Island.
