FAA Confirms Mid-Air Wing Collision Between Two Planes at San Francisco Airport

The Federal Aviation Administration disclosed that two United Airlines aircraft at the San Francisco International Airport narrowly missed disaster as they touched wings just prior to takeoff. This event happened around midnight local time on Tuesday “within an area where air traffic controllers typically have no communication with pilots,” according to an FAA press release cited by CNN. During this occurrence, which involved United Flight 863 moving away from the boarding gate and brushing against United Flight 877’s left wing, one jet was en route to Sydney, Australia, whereas the other was set to fly towards Hong Kong. In statements provided through company representatives, it was noted that all passengers disembarked without harm. Furthermore, efforts were underway to find alternative routes for these travelers via rerouting onto different flights. Notably, another such near-collision involving airplane wings has previously taken place.
