Restored Portrait of Hawaiian Princess Reclaims Its Throne at Iolani Palace

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The portrait of Princess and Governor Virginia Kapooloku Poomaikelani from Hawaii Island is now back on display at Iolani Palace following thorough conservation and restoration work.

The Poomaikelani painting was restored in 1972 and has remained within the palace’s collection ever since. Approximately one year back, it underwent professional conservation work and currently adorns the walls of the King’s bedroom.

The unveiling ceremony included a cultural protocol event conducted by members of the Royal Order of Kamehameha I.

The painting, completed in 1885 by the Serbian artist Paul Petrovits, was among three portraits ordered by King Kalakaua.

She has been under our care for decades, but this is the first time in many years she has been on exhibit after undergoing restoration,” stated Leona Hamano, the curator of Iolani Palace. “This is a crucial moment because the portrait was made during a pivotal period in our kingdom’s history.

The conservation is part of continuous initiatives to preserve and honor na mea makamae (Hawaiian treasures) at Iolani Palace.

Thanks to ongoing community backing, both the Friends of Iolani Palace and the curatorial team plan to rehabilitate and exhibit the last pair of Petrovits paintings by late 2026.
