Having spent just two days as Quincy’s mayor, Linda Moore has suggested forming two committees to address issues related to housing and tourism within the city.
The housing task force will develop strategies to address the lack of housing and also work on repairing rundown houses.
Moore stated that the primary concern in the community remains housing.
“The organizations focused on housing should gather around the table to explore common solutions and strategies that address the requirements of our entire community, rather than those of a single group,” she stated.
The committee will consist of landlords, participants from the Q-RILE Initiative, along with various organizations that have been aiding with the housing problem in Quincy.
She mentioned that assembling these individuals will provide the city with a significant edge.
“I strongly believe that our similarities outweigh our differences. Therefore, let’s identify shared values and work from there. We all concur that every individual has the right to secure and habitable homes without any doubt. The real issue lies in figuring out ways to achieve this, implementing current regulations effectively, and enhancing conditions for everyone,” Moore stated.
Moore additionally aims to establish a commission focused on promoting sports tourism in the region.
When the organization was established in the middle of the 1980s in St. Louis, she also participated in a similar panel. She mentioned that due to numerous competitions and various athletic happenings in the region, the city has the potential to expand further via this board, such as developing an indoor sports complex.
There are several spots in town where I envision an indoor sports complex being constructed or expanded,” Moore explained. “These areas would ideally have eateries or residences nearby too, since this isn’t just about attracting external teams and competitions; we also require spaces for our local pupils and athletes to use.
Moore mentioned that local organizations she aims to include on the committee consist of SeeQuincy, along with representatives from Quincy University and various nearby educational institutions.
Director Holly Cain of SeeQuincy stated that considering the numerous varied sporting events occurring nearly every weekend, it is worthwhile to invest time and resources into enhancing sports tourism within Quincy.
“It has the potential to be a significant benefit for our local community, perhaps eliminating the need for them to travel for each sports tournament or make frequent trips to St. Louis every weekend. We’re very excited about what this development might offer and appreciate the support from the surveys and studies conducted,” Cain stated.
