Questions Loom for DMV Visitors as REAL ID Deadline Approaches

The Department of Homeland Security
announced on Tuesday
that travelers who still don’t have a REAL ID by the May 7 deadline will be allowed to fly domestically, but they should be prepared for extra steps at the airport.

Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem said people without an identification that complies with the REAL ID law “may be diverted to a different line, have an extra step.”

Many people were having trouble getting their REAL ID approved at the DMV in Silvis, Illinois, on Tuesday.

Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias stated on Monday, ‘We aren’t trying to dissuade individuals from obtaining a REAL ID, but the reality is that most people don’t require one until after this coming Wednesday,’ he noted.

The wait times for walk-in visits at the Silvis DMV fluctuated during the day; however, many individuals were sent away without being served.

“I’m quite troubled at the moment since I didn’t manage to obtain it,” stated Nanette Taylor. “Given that my name has changed due to being married and then divorced, I now require additional documentation. This was something I wasn’t aware of.”

In order to obtain approval for a REAL ID, individuals must provide proof of any name alterations, like a marriage license or a legal decree.

The Department of Homeland Security has not yet specified what extra measures passengers with non-REAL ID-compliant licenses must follow to be able to board internal flights.

Several individuals at the Silvis DMV who were not granted REAL IDs still acknowledged their comprehension of why this policy is being implemented.

“I believe it’s fine. Of course, when it comes to matters of security or safety… However, I would like to obtain mine today so that I have it,” stated Patsy Stinson, a woman who similarly did not receive her REAL ID at the DMV on Tuesday.

The Department of Homeland Security has not specified whether individuals will require a REAL ID to enter federal and secured buildings by Wednesday, nor have they clarified if this exemption pertains solely to airport security.

“I possess an identification card; however, currently, they require the gold star version… At my workplace, which involves occasional duties at the nuclear facility, having the Real ID is mandatory for entry since our badges no longer suffice,” explained Kantime Kolani.

The REAL ID remains voluntary. It isn’t required for driving, voting, or everyday identification purposes.

Authorities are likewise advising citizens that if they possess a currently valid U.S. passport, they can utilize this document instead of upgrading to a REAL ID immediately, waiting until their identification card or driver’s license needs renewal.

What does REAL ID stand for?

The legally required change mandates that identification cards or driving permits issued by states must adhere to the safety criteria outlined in a legislation enacted in 2005 following the September 11th terrorist strikes.

If you’ve renewed your license in the past few years,
It’s possible you’re already covered.
Search for a gold or black star on your ID – this indicates the REAL ID designation in many states.

The REAL ID Act was supposed to begin rolling out in 2008, “but has faced repeated delays due to state implementation challenges and the COVID-19 pandemic,” Nina Ruggiero, senior editorial director for Travel + Leisure, told the Associated Press.

Who needs a REAL ID?

If your driver’s license or state-level ID is not REAL ID compliant by the deadline, you can expect to face delays and additional screening and the possibility of not being allowed beyond the airport’s security checkpoint, TSA says. Noem’s comments Tuesday clarified those without a REAL ID can still fly.

However, other forms of identification will be accepted by TSA.

You will still require your passport for traveling abroad, which includes journeys to countries like Canada or Mexico as well as international cruise voyages.

TSA-approved identification:

  • State-issued Enhanced Driver’s License
  • U.S. passport
  • U.S. passport card
  • DHS approved traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
  • U.S. Department of Defense ID, such as those provided to family members
