During Monday evening’s city council session, the Jefferson City Council agreed to sign a deal with Engineering Surveys and Services for designing the roundabouts.
One of the traffic circles would be located at the crossing of West Stadium Boulevard, which is a four-corner junction dividing the Jefferson City Medical Group from Mid-America Bank.
Further along the way, the municipality intends to install an independent traffic circle at the triangular junction formed by Creek Trail Drive.
In 2014, the city carried out a traffic analysis in the region which concluded that both crossroads would benefit from implementing roundabouts.
Julie Allen, the councilwoman for Jefferson City’s fourth ward, notes that Ward Four is already bustling due to places like Capital City High School, JCMG, Sam’s Club, and Menards. She adds that upcoming additions, including a new dental clinic and a Center of Excellence healthcare education facility, will only increase traffic and activity in the region.
Allen pointed out that it’s currently bustling, but things will intensify further.
Right at the junction of the creek trail lies the Old Brickhouse Deli.
A worker there mentions that safety is a major issue at the crossing.
“I often see children zooming down this street, constantly speeding right through this stop sign. Despite the speed limit being 40 mph, folks usually cruise at around 50 or even 60 mph when driving down here,” stated Zach Burkemper.
David Bange, the engineer from Jefferson City, states that the city’s Capital Improvement sales tax will finance the initiative.
Bange mentions that they anticipate around one year of design work and a traffic analysis for the region before considering starting construction. He states that the city plans to increase the sales tax by half a cent in the autumn of 2026, marking a significant move toward initiating the project.
Bange expresses their desire to start working on the roundabouts in 2028.
