AUSTIN (KXAN) — Due to an Omega blocking pattern, a significant amount of Gulf moisture will flow into the southern Plains and Deep South, leading to extensive thunderstorm activity as we kick off the upcoming week. Some of these storms might become severe.
Across the Midwest and Northeast regions, significant rainfall is anticipated to cause disruptions for travelers, with potential instances of sudden flash floods.
The northern Plains can expect above-average temperatures along with generally dry conditions for the coming week.
Omega Blocking Pattern
This meteorological event is called Omega due to its resemblance to the Greek letter Ω. It occurs when a high-pressure zone becomes trapped between two lower pressure zones, disrupting the typical progression of atmospheric patterns. Such an arrangement frequently causes severe weather conditions to linger over a specific area for multiple days or sometimes even weeks.
Severe Weather Breakdown
The Storm Prediction Center has flagged several states for possible severe weather over the next few days.
