Formerly known as the “Irish Fifth Avenue,” Alexander Avenue is situated within the Mott Haven district in the southern part of the Bronx, just adjacent to the Harlem River. This bustling street offers plenty of action with spots such as Beatstro, a restaurant speakeasy run by native Bronx residents offering contemporary American cuisine alongside events including listening sessions and music-filled brunches.
Many options are available for traveling to and from Alexander Avenue in New York City. The public transportation system provides access via the Two, Four, Five, and Six subway lines as well as the BX1, M125, BX33, BX21, and BX32 bus routes. If you prefer driving, multiple bridges connect to Alexander Avenue such as the Triborough Bridge, Third Avenue Bridge, Madison Avenue Bridge, 145th Street Bridge, and Willis Avenue Bridge. For those arriving from another state, LaGuardia Airport is just a 20-minute drive away, whereas JFK International Airport takes approximately 50 minutes by car.

Alexander Avenue Used to Be Predominantly Irish 5th Avenue
In the late 1800s, Alexander Avenue became home to numerous Irish medical professionals, earning it the moniker “Irish Fifth Avenue.” Many structures along Alexander Avenue date back to the nineteenth century; notably, the row homes situated between 139th and 140th Streets stand among the oldest townhouses in the area due to their construction during the 1860s. Industrial magnate Jordan Mott, whom Mott Haven bears his name after, established an ironworks enterprise here, attracting waves of Irish migrants to settle in the vicinity. These residences feature distinctive elements such as ornamental staircases, wrought-iron fences, and matching rooflines, setting them apart from others across NYC still today.
Over time, these original inhabitants moved away, transforming the street into a multicultural hub. As recently as 2022, Mott Haven’s populace exceeded 146,000 individuals comprising various ethnicities: around two-thirds identified themselves as Hispanic or Latinx, approximately one-quarter as Black Americans, about three percent as Caucasian, and roughly two percent under different racial classifications.
In 2022, the median gross rent in Mott Haven stood at $1,020, while purchasing a home there ranges from $270,000 to $1,035,000.

Situated at 131 Alexander Avenue, this standalone bookstore functions not only as an outlet for best-selling literature but also as a cozy wine bar offering fine selections like Chianti. In addition to providing great reads and drinks, the shop organizes gatherings such as a Latina readers meet-up, during which attendees shared books significant to their Latinx heritage.
