HAWKINS, Texas (KLTV) – A clear indication that summertime is approaching can be seen with the emergence of roadside produce stands across East Texas. This custom draws buyers who aim to cut costs and purchase fresh goods.
As the daylight hours stretch during springtime, locations such as Highway 14 Produce in Hawkins return to operation. This familiar rhythm holds both sentimental charm and functionality.
“You know, the produce comes directly from that person who grows their own vegetables. That’s a positive aspect: they’re not getting these items from another source,” stated Michael L. Evans, a native of Longview.
Initially, products come from other states like Florida until the local produce becomes available. However, starting next week, stalls will start receiving locally grown items, featuring fresh local peaches.
“One shopper mentioned they have peas along with some tiny tomatoes.”
“First off, you’re backing your nearby farmers. Additionally, you receive fresher goods. There’s also a wider selection available, plus I believe the products are crisper here. And let’s not forget, you won’t depend on delivery trucks transporting everything,” explained another customer.
Due to limited budgets, individuals are striving to balance expenses by purchasing fresh items at a more affordable cost. The appeal lies in acquiring fresh produce, often harvested almost directly from the plant, and doing so economically.
“Absolutely, and you picked out some quality produce,” Evans commented.
Additionally, more individuals are seeking ways to preserve food. Maximizing their budget can significantly aid in managing expenses, and purchasing from roadside produce stands simultaneously supports local farmers.
