U.S. Issues Urgent Travel Warning as Security Threats Escalate

The U.S. Department of State has released a fresh travel advisory, warning visitors about an emerging hazardous condition abroad.

American embassies abroad frequently issue these warnings when circumstances worsen in regions frequented by U.S. travelers.

On May 2, 2025, the Department of State issued two such warnings.
to its X page.

An alert highlighted an announcement from an “illegal armed group” about an impending “armed strike,” as stated by the State Department. This notification was categorized by the State Department as a “security alert.”

“Colombia: Members of the illegal armed group Ejército de Liberación Nacional, a U.S.-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization, have announced an ‘armed strike’ in Chocó Department May 2 at noon until May 5 at midnight,” the alert says.

“United States citizens are advised to depart from the Chocó Department at their earliest convenience. Should departure be unfeasible, stay inside and find safe refuge. Avoid engaging with armed persons. Keep track of local news updates,” the advisory states.

The State Department
provided additional details
On their website, if individuals cannot exit the region, they are advised to follow these steps,
according to a list
found on the State Department’s official webpage:

  • Secure drinkable water
  • Find cover and fortify it as much as you can.
  • Remain indoors
  • Avoid engaging with guerrillas or armed persons.
  • Keep a high level of alertness
  • Stay alert to what’s around you.
  • Keep a low profile
  • Avoid crowds
  • Keep an eye on nearby news sources for security updates.

On May 2nd, the State Department
also posted
an alert was issued for a potential tsunami in Chile, though this threat did not come to fruition. On April 30, 2025, the State Department
also warned
of potentially dangerous demonstrations in Colombia.
