U.S. Ends Visa-Free Travel for Romanians

The U.S. has reversed its choice to include Romania in the Visa Waiver Program, an initiative permitting brief trips to America without obtaining a visa. This reversal comes after the previous endorsement made by ex-President Joe Biden was withdrawn, as reported by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

It was anticipated that Romania would join as the 43rd nation in the Visa Waiver Program. Ex-President Joe Biden gave approval for the invitation on January 9, roughly 11 days prior to the conclusion of his term.

On March 25, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security opted to reassess Romania’s standing within the Visa Waiver Program. However, this decision was formally rescinded on May 2, in conjunction with the State Department. Both agencies stated that the reversal aimed at “upholding the integrity of the VWP and bolstering border and immigration safety.”

“We appreciate Romania’s strong collaboration over the years to boost security cooperation. There is potential for Romania to be reconsidered for admittance into the Visa Waiver Program in the future,” stated Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.

The Romanian administration has requested the US to explain the rationale for canceling their involvement in the visa-waiver travel initiative.

“Romanian citizens should receive the same treatment as individuals from other allied nations enjoying visa-free travel to the United States. Consequently, the Romanian government will maintain high-level diplomatic discussions to ensure that the rights of Romanian citizens are completely upheld,” the statement read.

Previously, The Financial Times mentioned that both Romania and Bulgaria expressed worry over a possible deal between the US and Russia which might affect security dynamics in the Black Sea region.

Following the report, the Romanian Parliament supported an initiative to increase its naval forces and strengthen NATO’s position in the area.
