NACOGDOCHES, Texas (KTRE) — In Nacogdoches, when significant rainfall occurs within a brief period, hazardous flooding can rapidly turn into an issue.
Often, our storm drainage systems become overloaded,” noted City Public Works Director Case Opperman. “We’ve also observed creeks overflowing their banks over the last few years.
The city workers began their preparations very early on Friday morning by inspecting the storm drains and inlets that tend to become blocked.
“Pipes that tend to accumulate debris in their path, hindering the flow. Our aim is to inspect and clear these blockages,” explained Opperman.
Teams will keep an eye on the weather conditions throughout Friday evening in case they need to set up barriers at roadway intersections. The areas expected to be hit hardest include South Fredonia Street, West Main Street, and Powers Street, as well as Banita Creek, all of which are located in lower-lying regions.
Opperman mentioned that the city bond initiatives along with the plans involving TxDOT aim to mitigate flood-prone regions through enhanced stormwater systems and raising current bridge structures. Nonetheless, these improvements are expected to take several more years before they are finished.
“Hopefully enhancing the capacity of the creeks, elevating the bridges, and providing additional space within the channel,” clarified Opperman.
The city advises motorists to exercise caution and avoid driving through deep water. Remember, turn around, don’t drown.
“It only requires a few inches of water accumulated on the road to cause a car to become buoyant and potentially be swept away,” he stated.
