Newly Enhanced Flint Hills Trail Set to Open in May

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — On Friday, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) declared the completion and inauguration of an upgraded portion of the Flint Hills Trail State Park located in Franklin County.

The 2.3-mile section situated west of Ottawa from Louisiana Terrace to Iowa Road will be inaugurated for public use on Saturday, May 17.

Construction is scheduled to start on the initial Buc-ee’s location in Kansas.

After it opens, guests can utilize 93 miles of uninterrupted trails stretching from Osawatomie to Council Grove.

The construction featured a 10-foot-wide multipurpose path, a footbridge spanning the BNSF Railway, as well as enhancements to three pre-existing structures.

Due to these improvements, guests can now avoid the 3.4-mile roundabout on local streets just to traverse the railway lines safely.

“Every finished segment brings us closer to uniting communities, enhancing recreational opportunities, and enabling more residents of Kansas to appreciate the state’s natural splendor,” stated KDWP Secretary Christopher Kennedy.

The department stated that the initiative was facilitated by a Transportation Alternatives Program grant provided by the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT).
