EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – The REAL ID enforcement date is set for May 7th, which means air passengers only have under a week left before the airport security protocols get updated.
Beginning next week, every passenger aged 18 and above must possess a REAL ID, passport, or some other approved identification to prevent hold-ups and successfully boarding their flight.
The REAL ID Act was approved by Congress in 2005 as an immediate security measure following the events of September 11, 2001. The implementation of this program has faced multiple significant postponements, with the ultimate deadline set for May 7th.
Travelers should examine their driver’s licenses to confirm whether they bear a star,” stated TSA Regional Spokesperson Jessica Mayle. “It’s possible you’ve been compliant for some time without realizing it. Just ensure this when planning future trips.
Mayle indicates that approximately 81% of individuals who were screened at airports have possessed a valid ID according to the updated regulations.
I believe there’s a group among those 19% who possess what could be effective solutions; they simply haven’t utilized them yet since we haven’t reached our deadline,” explained Mayle. “Once we hit that mark, let’s see how things unfold. We’ve got an action plan ready, and our aim is to process as many individuals as possible.
The TSA keeps issuing reminders to travelers without REAL IDs.
Having lasted nearly a year so far, when your turn comes around and you lack a REAL ID, our system checks and flags this identification; subsequently, we’ve distributed written notifications,” she explained. “Recently, over the past several weeks, I’ve observed an increase in travelers being more attentive to this requirement, which is excellent news. However, if you’re planning trips within the month of May, it’s crucial to address this matter promptly.
If you decide to travel with an alternative form of identification instead of a REAL ID, be prepared for potential holdups. According to Mayle, additional screening measures will likely be required prior to boarding your aircraft.
“If you’re showing up without any valid identification, make sure to arrive much earlier,” Mayle advised.
