Following multiple delays, the deadline for obtaining a Real ID is set for next week.
It’s not strictly make or break, but if your home is in Massachusetts and you’re planning some summertime travels, those plans might get trickier.
“There seems to be a slight sense of panic among people, and I believe some individuals might be unduly worried about obtaining their Real ID promptly,” stated Mark Shieldrop from AAA Northeast.
The ID was established following the events of September 11th to enhance security protocols related to identification.
On May 7, individuals who are 18 years old and above will require an ID for domestic flights and entry into specific federal buildings. Acceptable forms of identification include passports along with other IDs approved by the TSA.
“Simply put, May 7 is when the TSA will start enforcing the Real ID requirements for domestic flights. Many people without immediate travel plans can afford to wait,” Schieldrop explained.
The Massachusetts RMV indicates that almost 60% of the state’s population has adopted the new form of enhanced ID. Currently, reservations at the RMV are fully booked for about six weeks ahead; however, walk-in services remain an option.
Should you be a AAA member, you have the option to schedule a Real ID appointment at one of their branches.
We experienced an unprecedented surge in customer demand during April,” stated Massachusetts Registrar Colleen Ogilvie. “The key message I wish to communicate is not to worry; we’re here to assist you.
